AVFP Water Sanitation and Hygiene

AVFP implements Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programs (WASH) in both Kisumu informal settlements and rural areas targeting households, schools and food vendors with specific objectives.

Objectives

  • To increase timely and equitable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services to affected communities, and to maintain stability of access to such services in areas lacking safe drinking and cooking water.
  • Strengthen chronically vulnerable communities to (manage the) WASH crisis, with a priority in piloting use of water filters, and supporting entrepreneurial activities with this product. We also work with stakeholders in developing a water infrastructure and assist in the maintenance of existing water systems.
  • Facilitate behavior change in chronically vulnerable communities in sanitation and hygiene by encouraging hand washing and use of water filters to access clean and safe drinking water.

Main Activities for WASH:

  • Conducting Safe Water awareness campaigns by partnering with different stakeholders
  • Conducting community water needs assessments
  • Training our participants on household water filter systems
  • Conducting pilots on water filter use in different locations within Kisumu County, especially Muhoroni Sub-County and Manyatta informal settlement in Kisumu city
  • Monitoring household water filter use
  • Participating in Global Handwashing Day
